80th Annual Exhibition
Laura Berman, juror and visiting artist
February 21-March 14, 2008
Academy Art Center, Honolulu Academy of Arts
The Honolulu Printmakers Annual Exhibition is a juried exhibition of
new prints by local artists from all over the state of Hawaii. It
takes place each February and March at the Academy Art Center in
Honolulu.
Each year a nationally recognized printmaker juries the exhibition.
Past jurors have included such well-known printmakers as Kathan
Brown, Judith Solomon, Hugh Merrill, Warrington Colescott and
Frances Myers. For the 80th Annual Exhibition, screenprint artist
Laura Berman of the Kansas City Art Institute selected 104 prints
from the more than 300 submitted by both emerging and established
Hawaii printmakers. Some of the 2008 works are shown below.
As part of the Exhibition, the Honolulu Printmakers commissions an
artist to make a Gift Print to
celebrate the art of printmaking.
This year’s Gift Print Artist was Duncan Dempster, a member of the
art faculty at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The print itself
is a closely guarded secret until the opening reception of the
exhibition.
Honolulu Printmakers also conducts
free tours of the exhibition with demonstrations for school groups
and the general public. A popular program, Prints on the Road, takes
prints from the exhibition to rural schools that cannot travel to
see the show in person.
