Annual Gift Print
Since 1933, Honolulu Printmakers has commissioned a well-known Hawai`i printmaker to produce an annual Gift Print which is offered for sale in association with our Annual Exhibition. This offering not only benefits the organization, but furthers our mission to develop an educated audience for fine prints. The list of artists who have produced these prints represents a veritable history of printmaking in the islands, with a wide variety of subjects, imagery and media which also reflect diverse interests in contemporary printmaking.

  Kimberly M. Chai, Stolen Hibiscus, relief print, 15.5" x 22.25", 2007
The image represents a yellow hibiscus plant which was stolen from a sidewalk garden on the artist's dog walking route near her Honolulu home.

Keiko Kamata, Trail, water based screenprint, 15" x 15", 2006
The edition consists of a series of subtly varying monoprints. The image intends to present and evoke an atmosphere of ambiguity in a state of repose.

Jeera Rattanangkoon Maile, color woodcut, 9” x 18”, 2005.
Created and printed on the Big Island, Maile is a bitter and sweet image of Hawaii’s landscape.

Hanae Uechi Mills, Smell of Rain, 11-color mixed media monoprint with two-sided chine colle and block print, 15” x 10”, 2004.
Each print is a memory of rain inspired by my travels to different parts of the world. All the prints in the series create familiar but different experiences.

Joseph Singer, heiau, O’ahu, photogravure, 13 " x 11," 2002.
The photogravure print captures the extreme spectrum of darkness to light chiaroscuro tonality. The print displays the landscape scene of a special heiau in nature’s tapestry.

Shirley Hasenyager, At Kilauea, mixed method etching, 9 " x 16," 2001.
Dutch mordant was used for the etched areas. It is printed on gray Rives BFK with phthalo green and intense black. My work is based on the landscape of Hawaii particularly the relationships of lava and new life.

Charles Cohan, Untitled, lithograph and woodcut, 22 " x 14," 1999.
This diptych, printed in many layers of rich reds, combines an anatomical rendering of a heart with a botanical silhouette.

David Smith

David Smith, By the Water's Edge, lithograph, 19" x 19," 1998.
A seven-color print inspired by the colors of the koi, the depths of and gentle movements of the water with so much life below; a spirit emerges from the quiet environment.

Marcia Morse

Marcia Morse, Earthseed, Screenprint and woodcut with pochoir on handmade paper, 20" x 16," 1997.
The image evokes a sense of right place and placement within the world which sustains us. The elements--earth, air, fire, water are parts of a global entity, planted in cosmic soil.

Ken Bushnell

Kenneth Bushnell, EDC: On Time, lithograph, 22" x 18," 1995.
A four-color print produced at Atelier Pousse Caillou in France. The warm sunny yellow is reminiscent of the pleasurable Mediterranean studio where it was created.

Each print is $90.00. In addition to the price of each print, please include $20.00 for shipping and handling.

Mai Ka Pohaku: From The Stone
This special project, organized by resident printer David Smith, encourages prominent Hawai`i artists--known for their work in other media--to create a lithograph, provided with with technical assistance in our shop.
